16/02/2010 - Cathy backs 104 Pairs of Shoes campaign

Local MSP Cathy Jamieson is supporting the YWCA’s 104 Pairs of Shoes campaign, highlighting violence against women.
The campaign is based on the UK statistic that "Two women are killed each week by a partner or former partner" - that's 104 women in a year.  A new exhibition of the shoes donated by politicians, celebrities, writers, singers, actors, business women and sports personalities will be shown at Bristo Hall, Edinburgh, prior to International Women’s Day, on the 7th March.

In the first exhibition in 2003 celebrities such as JK Rowling and Annie Lennox participated.  Then Cathy donated the shoes she wore to the opening of the Scottish Parliament, this year she has given the shoes she wore on her recent charity trek across Nepal.

Adding her support to the campaign Cathy said:
“The Scottish Parliament has a good record on speaking out against domestic abuse. We have tightened up the law in a number of ways, and introduced fast track domestic abuse courts. As Justice Minister I was proud to have worked on many these measures.

“However, we can never be complacent. There are still far too many domestic abuse cases in Scotland.  That’s why we must always look for ways to highlight the issue, and support those affected to speak out.  As such I am delighted to once again support the 104 pairs of shoes exhibition.”
