18/02/2010 - MSP Meets Kilmarnock Cycle Project

Cathy Jamieson MSP recently met with Kilmarnock Can Cycle in the Scottish Parliament to discuss the organisation’s work.

Project Manger Gordon Neil and Kilmarnock Can Cycle volunteer Lee McLaughlin explained how the charity helps disadvantaged children buy bikes at low cost.

Kilmarnock Can Cycle funds all this through recycling aluminium cans from local schools, shops and pubs. The charity then uses the money collected from the aluminium cans to repair bicycles, and offers low cost cycles to the local children, as well as sending them to communities in the Third World.

Cathy- a keen Kilmarnock F.C supporter- also learned that a newly purchased van (thanks to a £10,000 grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery) has enabled the collection of even more cans to a recycling centre- meaning Kilmarnock Can Cycle can do even more to help kids.

Cathy said of the project: “It’s great to see such passion and originality in helping both local kids and those abroad. Cycling is a great way to keep fit and have fun, while recycling cans is something we can all help with and do our little bit for our community.”
