26/01/2010 - Ministerial ‘gaffe’ as Coffey told to ‘tackle’ himself on derelict buildings

Local MSP, Cathy Jamieson expressed her surprise as Environment Minister, Rosanna Cunningham, instructed SNP colleague Willie Coffey to raise the issue of derelict buildings, with himself.  Responding to a question in the Scottish Parliament on “vacant industrial sites” the Minister advised Mr Coffey to “tackle his local authority on the issue”.  Kilmarnock MSP Coffey is also a local Councillor on SNP-controlled East Ayrshire Council.

Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP Ms Jamieson described the Ministers remarks as an “embarrassing gaffe” and also called for Scottish Government action on the issue of derelict buildings.

Ms Jamieson said:
“I am of course disappointed that the Minister has sought to wash her hands of this important issue.  Numerous constituents have been in touch with me on this matter, and  derelict, run-down buildings are having a negative effect on communities across the local area.”

Commenting on Ms Cunningham’s gaff, Cathy added:
“It is surprising that the Environment Minister instructed Cllr Coffey to raise the issue of derelict land with his local authority. It is somewhat of an embarrassing gaffe by the Minister, who clearly had no idea that Cllr Coffey was also a local councillor.

“However, there is an important point in that the Minister clearly agrees with me that East Ayrshire Council is not doing enough on this matter.  It is an issue that needs to be tackled and if local authorities are unable or unwilling to do so then the Scottish Government must step in and take some action.”
