27/01/2010 - Cathy lodges pool motion

Local MSP Cathy Jamieson has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament to register her disgust at the recent decision of Tory/SNP-led South Ayrshire Council to demolish Girvan Swimming Pool.  The Carrick Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP is also urging the Scottish Government to enter discussions with the Council on Girvan’s regeneration.

Cathy said: “Many local people are absolutely disgusted that the Council are seeking to go ahead with the demolition of the pool.  It flies in the face of policies encouraging active, healthy lifestyles and would leave Girvan without the leisure facilities the community needs.

“The alternative plan put forward by Cllr McDowall has massive community support, and I’m glad it gained the support of all local councillors.  It is unfortunate that their Tory and SNP colleagues failed to recognise the significance of this issue.

“There also remains the question of Scottish Government Town centre Regeneration funds.  There was clearly a raft of bids from across the country, and it was disappointing that the SNP Government failed to support the Girvan bid, yet there needs to be further discussion on regeneration.”
